1 Vagueness as Second - Level Indeterminacy

چکیده

Let a sentence be second-level indeterminate just in case it has different truth-values under different acceptable assignments of semantic values, and let a sentence be first-level indeterminate just in case there are acceptable assignments under which the sentence lacks a classical, determinate truth-value. Many theorists of vagueness take for granted that the indeterminacy with which vagueness is associated is first-level indeterminacy. The chief opposing view is the epistemicist view, according to which the indeterminacy with which vagueness is associated is merely an epistemic phenomenon. I argue that vagueness is better seen as associated with second-level indeterminacy.

Indeterminacy, Degree of Belief, and Excluded Middle

1. Referential indeterminacy (for instance, indeterminacy as to what a singular term stands for or what a general term has as its extension) is a widespread phenomenon. Ordinary vagueness is a special case of indeterminacy: for instance, it is indeterminate whether the word ‘rich’ has in its extension certain moderately rich people, and it is indeterminate precisely which atoms are parts of the...

Translating Vagueness? A Study on Translations of Vague Quantifiers in an English-Chinese Parallel Corpus

In this paper we investigate variation in the translation of three vague quantifiers, many, some and a few between English and Chinese. Studies of ‘linguistic vagueness’ (sometimes called ‘language vagueness’ in previous research) regard vagueness as a general phenomenon in language. In this type of study, vagueness is often discussed – but not limited – to indeterminacy of the referential boun...

Indeterminism and Indeterminacy

1. E.J. Lowe claims that quantum physics provides examples of ontic indeterminacy, of vagueness in the world. Any such claim must confront the Evans-Salmon argument to the effect that the notion of ontic indeterminacy is simply incoherent (Evans 1978, Salmon 1981: 243-46). Lowe argues that a standard version of the Evans-Salmon argument fails quite generally (Lowe 1994). Harold Noonan (1995) ha...

Chris Kennedy Seminar on Vagueness University of Chicago 25 April , 2006

The supervaluationist analyses of vagueness developed by Kamp and Fine (and others) can be described as ‘model-theoretic’ accounts of vagueness, because they rely crucially on the idea that the indeterminacy of vague predicates is a consequence of the structure of the models with respect to which linguistic expressions receive their interpretations: they may be partial (this derives borderline ...

Worldly Indeterminacy: a Rough Guide

There is a widespread suspicion that indeterminacy and vagueness can only be features of claims or representations, and hence that it makes no more sense to ask whether the world is indeterminate than it does to ask whether the world rhymes or whether it’s written in English. On this view, it is not a genuine possibility that the world itself — as opposed to our representations of it — may be u...
